Teether & Kuya Neil are a rap duo from Melbourne, Australia.
Where do you live most of the year?
Neil: Naarm, Australia
Teether: London now but I’m gonna speak on the food in Naarm.
What do you look for in a restaurant when you walk in?
Neil: The right white people to ethnics ratio
Teether: Strange adornment on the walls, the same staff every day for 50 years.
What is your final meal?
Neil: Mum’s beef soup (Linat-an Baka) with rice. Fresh mango and masareal for dessert.
Teether: I reckon my dad’s beans and sima, with mum’s egg custard tiramisu for dessert! And anything else I can find to delay death coming for me.
3 guests for dinner, dead or alive?
Neil: DJ Rashad, The Undertaker and my grandma
Teether: Ronaldinho, Kirk Hammett and Anne Hathaway
Teether & Kuya Neil’s Taste Maker Guide
Breakfast:
Neil: French Baguette Cafe, Footscray
Order: Crackling roast pork banh mi with chilli. IDK if it’s weird to eat banh mi for breakfast but whatever…Their ingredients are really fresh, good portions and there's lots of comfortable seating!
Teether: I’m also having Footscray banh mi for breakfast but I gotta visit my aunties at Giò Chả & Bánh Mì Như-Ý down the road. And you know I pronounce that perfectly.
Order: Lemongrass and tofu banh mi, mad chilli.
Coffee:
Neil: Bread Club, North Melbourne
Order: Oat Latte, They have really good coffee and pastries.
Teether: Occident, Yarraville.
Order: Oat mocha, large. The food goes off too.
Lunch:
Neil: Cebu Charcoal Lechon, Sunshine North
Order: Lechon (roast pork) + steamed rice + vinegar, sprite.
Legit Filipino lechon spot in the west. They have a karaoke machine too! Shout out to my people from Cebu!
Teether: A1 Bakery, Brunswick.
Order: I used to live off the $7 falafel wrap. It’s probably more $$$ now but the whole menu is crazy. An important establishment.
Special dinner:
Neil: Ras Dashen, Footscray
Order: Beyaynetu, Fried Fish, Khey Wot, extra injera.
Iconic Ethiopian spot in Footscray. The food is consistently delicious and the owner Wondi is so friendly and welcoming. This is a go-to restaurant for a cosy meal and somewhere I always take friends visiting from out of town.
Teether: Vola Foods, Brunswick.
Order: I would just get the vegan box and go to town on it. It’s got everything you want, the plantains are insane, the coconut rice… don’t get me started. Nice outdoor section too and they throw parties there.
Casual dinner:
Neil: Xinjiang Lamian, Melbourne
Order: Chive Noodle, Lamb skewers. Super tasty and comforting - Laid back, friendly staff. Me and my gf got pretty addicted to this spot for a while. The Chive noodle is unbeatable
Teether: Just Kebabz, Kingsville.
Order: Falafel wrap and chips, maybe a gozleme instead. Depends on the day… This was my local spot and I will claim it as the best kebabs in Naarm. What a blessing it was to live in Kingsville.
Special shoutouts
Neil:
Nizams, North Melbourne - This is the late night post-studio spot for me and Teether on the way home to Footscray. I usually order Chicken 65 Biryani, Mango Lassi + Gulab Jamun
Panda BBQ, Melbourne CBD - Really nice place for dates and group dinners. They have these little swings for booths, with mini lockets you can write messages on and hang up. They also have karaoke and the decor is very cute <3
Goje, Yarraville - Best frozen yoghurt in Melbourne. I usually get pistachio, mango and strawberry with halva topping, cookies and crushed peanuts.
Teether:
Malaysian Laksa House, Melbourne CBD - Best laksa I ever had! 🤤
Cafe Lalibela, Footscray - You can pick anything off the menu and smile…
Cafe 666, Brunswick (RIP) - The owner always had my back, $10 any time even at 2am he got me. Miss this place a lot.
