Where do you live most of the year?
Melbourne :)
What do you look for in a restaurant when you walk in?
The ambiance is key. I love it when I can see the chefs cooking—there’s something so exciting about watching meals come together. The atmosphere is also important—do I feel welcomed when I walk in? And, of course, I always sneak a peek at what’s on everyone’s plates while walking to my table to decide what I’ll order.
What is your final meal?
Entrée: Oysters with lemon and Tabasco
Main: Mapo Tofu and Japanese Curry
Dessert: Japanese Strawberry Shortcake
3 guests for dinner, dead or alive?
Hailey Bieber
Princess Diana
Harry Styles
I honestly can’t think of a more iconic table.
Naomi’s Taste Maker Guide
Breakfast: CIBI, Collingwood, Melbourne
Order: The Japanese-style breakfast with salmon, rice, egg, miso soup. I want to feel like I’m back in Japan eating with my grandparents, and this meal delivers exactly that feeling. Oh, and the Yuzu Spritz is perfect for a hot day!
Coffee: I don’t drink coffee (I know, so un-Melbourne of me!) - I drink matcha instead. My top picks are my own kitchen (I make the best matcha, definitely unbiased) or Hikari in the CBD.
Order: Matcha with full cream milk, no sweetener.
Lunch: South Melbourne Markets, South Melbourne
Order: The choices here are endless, but my absolute favourite is Claypots—the fresh fish sandwich is divine. Oh, and the gozlemes from Köy Gözleme! Chef’s kiss.
Special dinner: Kisumé, Melbourne
Kisumé is the ultimate special occasion spot—offering intimate, fine Japanese dining with a quiet, relaxed atmosphere perfect for easy conversation. The staff are incredible, and you have to try the kingfish sashimi and wagyu beef!
Casual dinner: My go-to casual dinner is always Malaysian food, and I’m 100% getting it on Uber Eats, so I can plop myself on the couch and watch a show. I love a PappaRich moment, and my order is always nasi lemak—curry, fried anchovies, peanuts, egg, sambal sauce. The ultimate comfort meal.
Special shoutouts
Kaprica - The mood is immaculate. The staff? Vibey and trendy. Massive pasta portions, dim lighting—one of my faves.
Gogyo - Some of the best ramen I’ve had in Australia—and that’s coming from a Japanese person! The classic tonkotsu is unbeatable.
Madam Saigon - This is where I go for my banh mi fix. My order: crispy pork, chilli, extra cucumber.
Samgasat - Shoutout to Cairns, where I grew up! This spot has authentic Thai food and makes you feel like you’re actually in Thailand. The whole fried fish is incredible—mouthwatering.
