Ben’s Taste Maker Guide
Breakfast: Taiwanese Breakfast @ Yi Mei San Gabriel, San Gabriel Valley
Order: Purple Rice Roll, Radish Cake, Beef Sandwich or Beef Roll(taiwanese wrap), Sausage rice plate.
Add in warm soy milk if you want to mix it up, although I don't often get that.
Coffee: How's It Going To End?, Montrose, LA
Order: Strong latte.
It’s the vibe here that is amazing. Angular mid century building with desert landscaping, on its own corner lot in Montrose.
Lunch: Wax Paper, Los Angeles
A rather well known spot that any out of towners need to try. To me, this was the place that flipped the narrative on sandwiches before everywhere else was doing it. Every single sandwich is great with special house made condiments and details.
Order: Audie Cornish (Black forest ham, cheddar, house honey butter), or Steve Julian (roasted shredded pork with miso aioli and pickled carrot/daikon). I also always grab a maple cold brew and sit by the LA river to think.
Special dinner: Bar Chelou, Pasadena
A hip, weird creative take on a french bistro, colorful design, creative food, nice drinks.
Order: Scallop tartare, Iberico pork chop(so good), Duck leg, Snap peas, clam toast, Carrots with lime coconut dressing.
Casual dinner: Zizou, Los Angeles
This place is french moroccan. The vibe is crazy, like you've stepped into a quirky Moroccan hi fi vinyl bar. Most of the restaurant is situated in a hidden lush garden courtyard, which is great for summer with the sky and string lights above you. Not exactly casual but a nice balance.
Order: Chicken Tajine, Tabouleh, Steak and Frites, Moules frites
Special shoutouts
Luv2eat Thai Bistro, Hollywood - Jade noodles or spicy crab curry.
Little Pan USC, Los Angeles - This has these amazing juicy pork soup buns like a large dumpling, crispy friend on the bottom.
Dai Ho, Los Angeles - Taiwanese dishes including a "cold plate", a kind of Taiwanese chopped salad full of herbs, spicy. in Arcadia.
Mason's Dumpling Shop, Highland Park, LA - juicy pork dumplings.
Silverlake Ramen, Los Angeles - Tsukemen dipping ramen only! the best Tsukemen I’ve had in the world due to its dashi flavored thick pork broth and thick noodles.
NEP Cafe, near Irvine - Vietnamese brunch - Everything is good.
