Cut Worms is the music project of American singer, songwriter, and musician Max Clarke.
Where do you live most of the year?
Brooklyn, New York.
What do you look for in a restaurant when you walk in?
I look for a comfortable atmosphere, warm lighting, not fluorescent, not too loud… somewhat tasteful music if that’s not too much to ask. I really dislike when I’m trying to eat and there’s some crazy dance beat or pop music blaring.
What is your final meal?
I’ve never thought about it, actually. Something home-cooked would be nice, maybe a nice Thanksgiving kind of spread.
3 dream guests for dinner?
That’s a tough one, but maybe like David Lynch, Alan Watts, and George Harrison. I think that would be a good gang to get some far out conversations happening.
Max’s Taste Maker Guide
Breakfast: Shelsky’s, Brooklyn
Order: My go-to order, as unhealthy as it is, is a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on an everything bagel, toasted. With coffee and maybe an orange juice.
Coffee: I used to always go to a local place called Cuppa Hive but we moved out of the neighborhood. Variety Coffee is one of my favorites in the city.
Order: Usually an Americano, hot or iced depending on the season, with a little milk, no sugar. Occasionally I’ll go for the cappuccino.
Lunch: A good local sandwich shop is what I’m usually after. There’s a place called Nhà Mình that I like a lot. Vietnamese food.
Order: Lemongrass chicken bahn mi sandwich. Plenty of cilantro and lime. No jalapenos. They have a host of great homemade sauces–I go for the ginger one mixed with some sriracha.
Special dinner: Kiki’s, NYC
Order: Great Greek restaurant on the lower east side. It’s sort of “family style” which I don’t always love, but the food is great and it’s ideally suited for having a nice group of people together to eat. Chicken Souvlaki, Spanakopita, Roasted Lemon Potatoes, Spanakorizo, Horiatiki Salad, and Tzatziki.
Casual dinner: Omar’s Indian Fine Cuisine
Order: Chicken Tikka Masala. Pretty easy, reliable, hits the spot.
Special shoutouts
We just moved to a new neighborhood and are discovering some new places around here in Red Hook, Brooklyn. A few we’ve frequented lately are… Goog Thai Cookshop, The Good Fork, RHK Marketplace, Mazzat, Bar Mario
I’m a lover of pizza and Italian food so New York is an embarrassment of riches. I like Carmine and Sons pizza in Williamsburg. Table 87 pizza is a favorite. There’s a place called Hoeks that I’ve heard good things about but haven’t yet been. Giovanni’s Brooklyn Eats is pretty good Italian. Thai For Thought and Raku in the East Village are great. Samurai Mama in Williamsburg is maybe my favorite sushi / Japanese food.
